St. George Leisure Activities

Nestled among the red rock cliffs and black lava buttes, St. George was
founded more than 130 years ago. The community pride of the tenacious
pioneers who settled the area is still the backbone of the community.
The people are friendly and courteous and it is safe to walk almost anywhere
alone at night, as there is very little crime and no dangerous areas of town.

Aquatic Center:
1144 North Lava Flow Drive, St. George (435) 634-5938. (check for time schedule availability) Come and
enjoy a swimming water workout in our state-of-the-art Sand Hollow Aquatic Center. Join our Aqua
Aerobic sessions, water walk, or lap swim at your leisure. The admission fee is $5.50 per visit for non-residents 60+. The pool will not be available from October 5th through October 7th during our Huntsman World Senior Games Swimming Competition.

Parks:
The City is very progressive when it comes to recreational services and residents and visitors alike are
served by its outstanding park system. There are over 26 parks scattered throughout the city which close
at 10:00 pm.

Recreation Center:
285 South 400 East, St. George (435) 634-5860 - is open for your use. Included are four Racquetball courts,
Fitness Center, and Multi-Purpose Center. The admission fee for full use of the facility is $3.00 per visit.
Drop in and have some fun! Hours: Monday - Friday 6:00am - 10:00pm; Saturdays 7:00am - 6:00pm (closed Sundays) . Since we will be using the Racquetball Courts for our Racquetball Competition they will not be available for play during that time .

Tennis Complex:
The City of St. George has eight tennis courts in Tonaquint Park. There is no charge for use of the facility. Since we will be using the tennis facility for our Tennis event, it will not be available for open play at that time.

Trails:
The City also boasts of over 19 miles of paved and natural surface trails, which are wonderful for walking, running, biking, etc. The only charge for use is a friendly smile and a warm hello to those you meet.
Maps of the Trail System will be available at the Games Headquarters - The Dixie Center.

Audubon Field Trip:
Go birding with Red Cliffs Audubon Chapter. Visit ponds, streams, open fields a great way to see the country.

St. George Dinosaur Discovery Site at Johnson Farm:
Visit the newly discovered Dinosaur Tracks found by Dr. Sheldon Johnson, on his farm a short drive from town.
Several footprints are actually a cast of the foot, where two hundred million years ago dinosaurs walked here and stepped in approx. 8 inches of clay. The clay rested on a layer of rock that filled with sand. It was perfect for making footprints. Open Daily 9:00 am - 8:00 pm, Sundays 4:00 pm -7:00 pm. Organized group tours are available by request. Pioneer Center For The Arts:
The Pioneer Center for the Arts encompassing the Opera House, St. George Art Museum and the Social
Hall, is located on the corner of Main and 200 North, St. George. Free Admission - Arranged Group Tours -Regularly Scheduled


Recreation Information - BLM:
Find out all there is to do in Southern Utah's great outdoors. They have maps, posters, hiking books,

Wildlife Museum:
The Rosenbruch World Wildlife Museum at the Dixie Center is a window to wildlife of the world. Visitors can

Zion Canyon Giant Screen Theatre:
The Zion Canyon Giant Screen Theatre is located at 145 Zion Park Blvd. , Springdale, Utah. The theater
is 45 miles northeast of St. George. There is a discount for anyone showing a HWSG ID Badge and their guests.

Historic Sites -The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints - Free!

St. George LDS Temple Visitors Center:
Located at 250 East 400 South. It took the Mormon pioneers of southern Utah six years to complete the beautiful white building that stands in the center of St. George today. Completed in 1877, it was the first Mormon temple finished west of the Mississippi and it is the oldest temple in use by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints today. Open 9 am to 9 pm, daily.

Brigham Young' s Winter Home:
The original portion of the home was begun in 1869 and completed in 1871. The front addition was
completed in 1873. Brigham Young became Dixie' s first ' snowbird, ' leaving the snow of Salt Lake City
behind and spending winters here in St. George' s temperate climate. Open 9 am to 6 pm, daily.

Jacob Hamblin Pioneer Home:
Located at the west end of the town of Santa Clara, just west of St. George, the Jacob Hamblin Home
is one of the earliest remaining symbols of the Mormon pioneer experience in Utah' s Dixie. Jacob Hamblin
was a noted missionary, Indian agent, colonizer and peacemaker. Hamblin' s home, built in 1862, is perhaps
the roughest construction of the preserved homes in the area. Its rooms, furnished with period furniture and artifacts, will take you back more than a century to the simple and challenging lifestyle of the pioneers.

St. George Tabernacle:
Located on the corner of Main and Tabernacle. It took 13 years to complete this building which includes
hand-quarried stone for the three-foot thick basement walls, hand-quarried and hand-cut red sandstone boulders for the 2-1/ 2-foot thick walls, hand-carved twin spiral staircases and 56' trusses which were
hand-hewn with a broad axe. Downstairs in the Tabernacle you will find an excellent art display.
