Over the past 27 years, the Huntsman World Senior Games has grown to be the largest annual multi-sport event in the world for athletes 50 and over. In that 27 year history, few sports have grown faster than the sport of Pickleball. Because of this rapid growth and the limited availability of Pickleball courts in the St. George area the Games has capped participation in Pickleball at 500 registered athletes. On March 2, 2013, the Games reached that cap and has closed online registration for Pickleball.
“We knew registrations would come in quickly this year,” said Kyle M Case, Games CEO. “But we were surprised at just how quickly they came in.”
The City of St. George added 12 Pickleball courts to their repertoire last year, but even with the additions, there still aren't enough courts to go around for this popular event.
Interested athletes, who have not registered, should not give up hope completely. The Games is compiling a waiting list and will do everything possible to accommodate as many Pickleball players as they can.
Athletes interested in being placed on the waiting list, should call the Games’ office at 800-562-1268 between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm Monday through Thursday. They will be placed on a list and if cancelations occur, those on the list will be given first consideration.
“We wish we could accommodate everybody who wanted to participate in the sport,” said Merrill Barney, Director of Sports for the Games. “Unfortunately, we are limited by the number of courts that are available.”
Barney added that, athletes really should call in and get on the waiting list because it is not uncommon to have some cancelations.
