Legendary Once Again

It’s all about the medal count.  That’s the way to amass an unreachable amount of points in The Challenge, a special program of the Huntsman World Senior Games.  Joyce Jones of Bethel, Washington has done just that.  This is the second year in a row that her Legends will have their name plaque added to the base of The Challenge Trophy.  And how many points did the squad earn?  Six Hundred Twenty total points, most of them by Gold Medal performances from squad members.

The Legends was made up of 25 members, the maximum allowed by the rules.  Many of their members participated in multiple sports.  Nine squad members; Nan Olath, Dan Bulkley, Gynt Clifford, Mike Freshley, Rosemarie Froeder, Horace Knowlton, Lynne Lund, Jurgen Schmidt and Avis Vaught earned at least 30 points through medal acquisitions.  Two squad members, Graham Johnston and Carolyn Lyman, tallied up 40 points apiece.  That’s a whopping 10 gold medals for those who are counting.

“I’ve really enjoyed watching my squad members participate in their various sports,” said Jones.  “I let them all know, they needed to sign up for multiple events and they needed to earn at least 10 points.”

The Red Rockers came in second place with 308 points.  Barbados followed with 253 and HVRP rounded out the squads with 99.  Each of the teams had also participated in last years Challege and all of the teams increased their point counts this year.  Barbados earned the most points for bringing the most first-time athletes with 21 points.
